A Few Words on Entropy, Thermodynamics, and Horizons

چکیده

We review recent progress in understanding certain aspects of the thermodynamics of black holes and other horizons. Our discussion centers on various “entropy bounds” which have been proposed in the literature and on the current understanding of how such bounds are not required for the semi-classical consistency of black hole thermodynamics. Instead, consistency under certain extreme circumstances is provided by two effects. The first is simply the exponential enhancement of the rate at which a macrostate with large entropy is emitted in any thermal process. The second is a new sense in which the entropy of an “object” depends on the observer making the measurement, so that observers crossing the horizon measure a different entropy flux across the horizon than do observers remaining outside. In addition to the review, some recent criticisms are addressed. In particular, additional arguments and detailed numerical calculations showing the observer dependence of entropy are presented in a simple model. This observer-dependence may have further interesting implications for the thermodynamics of black holes. For the Proceedings of the GR17 conference, Dublin, Ireland, July 2004.

Historical and Physical Account on Entropy and Perspectives on the Second Law of Thermodynamics for Astrophysical and Cosmological Systems

We performed an in depth analysis of the subjects of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics and how they are treated in astrophysical systems. These subjects are retraced historically from the early works on thermodynamics to the modern statistical mechanical approach and analyzed in view of specific practices within the field of astrophysics. As often happens in discussions regarding cos...

Entropy of Causal Horizons

We analyze spacetimes with horizons and study the thermodynamic aspects of causal horizons, suggesting that the resemblance between gravitational and thermodynamic systems has a deeper quantum mechanical origin. We find that the observer dependence of such horizons is a direct consequence of associating a temperature and entropy to a spacetime. The geometrical picture of a horizon acting as a o...

We study the thermodynamics of de Sitter black holes with a conformally coupled scalar field. The geometry is that of the “lukewarm” Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes, with the event and cosmological horizons at the same temperature. This means that the region between the event and cosmological horizons can form a regular Euclidean instanton. The entropy is modified by the non-minimal co...

Thermodynamic Relations for the Entropy and Temperature of Multi-Horizon Black Holes

We present some entropy and temperature relations of multi-horizons, even including the “virtual” horizon. These relations are related to the product, division and sum of the entropy and temperature of multi-horizons. We obtain the additional thermodynamic relations of both static and rotating black holes in threeand four-dimensional (A)dS spacetime. Especially, a new dimensionless, charge-inde...

The Statistical Mechanics of Horizons and Black Hole Thermodynamics

Although we know that black holes are characterized by a temperature and an entropy, we do not yet have a satisfactory microscopic " statistical mechanical " explanation for black hole thermodynamics. I describe a new approach that attributes the thermodynamic properties to " would-be gauge " degrees of freedom that become dynamical on the horizon. For the (2+1)-dimensional black hole, this app...
